Perhaps better known for their benchmark Riesling, don't sleep on Pike's reds. Dark and savoury, the rustic red earth and dark fruit of the tempranillo balances nicely alongside plump, plush fruit and cracked black pepper of the Shiraz. A dark, full bodied red to enjoy on a cold night.

Winery Notes - "Like all our reserve wines, the Merle is only produced in exceptional vintages. This release is proving to be extremely drinkable on release but will easily cellar for 10 years plus. Enjoy with Kingfish Sashimi."

As ever, the Pikes Riesling makes for a lovely, crisp drink in its youth - though with great potential to develop over the next 5-10 years. Typically showing fresh lemon and lime zest, white florals and tropical fruit notes, in time with will develop into flint-like mineral qualities and intensity of flavour.

Pirie Non Vintage Northern Tasmania is widely recognised for the quality of sparkling wine produced in the true cool climate of 41-42°S. The first Pirie Sparkling (1995 Vintage) did much to establish this reputation. Today the story continues with Pirie Non Vintage, a full flavoured Cuvee from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, boasting complexity from base wines produced in the unique sparkling terroirs of the region.
Producer Notes - "Place of Changing Winds is roughly equidistant between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook, hence the name of this cuvée, which is essentially the most representative Pinot of the season. It's a fine, textural Pinot produced from all the estate's plots (including the highest-density vines), save what went into the tiny Beyond the Forest cuvée. It spent 18 months maturing in Stockinger casks with 50% new oak. It was bottled in January 2024."

This year, the POCW team decided to see if a blend of the three white grapes they have in the cellar might work as well as the Tradition red. They were blown away by the result, and so were we. This is one-third Chardonnay from a new Dominique Laurent Tronçais cask and two-thirds Marsanne and Roussanne. It has all the generosity of this producer's Marsanne/Roussanne with the cut and thrust of the Chardonnay (not to mention some seriously classy oak). … more

On the nose it's varietal and has aromas of pear, apple and citrus with a slight hint of floral characters. The palate is a burst of citrus underpinned by balanced sweetness and acidity. Try it chilled with a soft cheese platter.

The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Cicala offers a ripe fruit profile with layers of menthol and medicinal herb. The finish is beautiful, long and chalky, and you don't get as much alcohol in the Cicala (compared to Romirasco). The fruit is dried and streamlined, and this wine does show good
promise for aging. The tannins are beautiful, coating your teeth and palate with no bitter edge.

The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows dark fruit intensity, dried cherry, spice, licorice and tilled earth. The wine delivers its aromas in a direct and immediate manner, with menthol and balsam herb fitting into oaky aromas of sweet spice. For whatever reason, I notice the oak more in Colonnello, but this will relax with time. The wine will be ready to drink after the 10-year mark.

Tenuta Roncaglia has always been recognised as one of the most prestigious and important Barbaresco production areas (also mentioned by Lorenzo Fantini in his book "Monograph on Viticulture and Oenology in the Province of Cuneo"1880). Alessandro Masnaghetti writes in his "Map of Barbaresco Cru, 1994: "...the position of Roncaglie, together with Roncagliette, is one of the best we can see on the side of the hill that begins at Roccalini and rises towards Treiso...".
