Screwcap closure. At the upper end of the Chardonnay planting, where the quartz in the soil is at the greatest concentration granting the fruit extra complexity, finesse and intensity. This wine comes exclusively from this one block, approximately half a hectare in size. The characteristics are similar to the Kosta's Rind Chardonnay (it is the same vineyard after all!) but all aspects are amplified here. The winemaking is largely the same for both wines however the Quartz Chardonnay sometimes spends a few months longer in barrel and there is a higher percentage of new wood used, being around 35%.
"The juice goes to barrel straight from the press tray, with no additions of yeast, nutrients or enzymes. Once the juice is in barrel a small amount of sulphur is added and then we wait, usually about five days, for the fermentation to begin. The wine has spent 10 months on yeast lees in French barrels, of which 35% are new, and bottling will take place late May. This Quartz 2018, from our 1988 planting, is bright and layered and has beautiful spice and citrus notes. It is very intense and mouth filling with tremendous drive and texture. The creamy, fresh, mineral, expansive palate is wonderfully long and balanced." Michael Dhillon
