The Veglio family ownes grapes in Barbaresco since 1931. Roccalini was the name given to this hill, and beautiful cru that overlooks the Tanaro River and Alba to the south, the Roero to the west and the famous tower of Barbaresco just to the north. The Veglio family were not farmers until third generation, Paolo Veglio the son, decided to go to school for oenology and 'save the family farm' so to speak. Up until 2005 all the fruit from this important cru was sold to Giacosa. Hence, this cru never saw its own name on a label until Paolo bottled the first bottles in 2005. Paolo is also the ONLY one bottling this cru that Masnaghetti calls 'one of the most interesting in all of Barbaresco.' The current vineyards in the Roccalini Barbaresco were planted in 1961, 1966, 2002 and 2011 Paolo does everything himself in the vineyards, with some help only from his mom in the cellar. No barriques, no yeasts, no finning, no filtering... pure perfect Nebbiolo made like 'once upon a time, ' in Barbaresco.
