Vietti Barolo Ravera Novello 2014

Another highlight in this range, the 2014 Barolo Ravera opens with the most exquisite, captivating aromatics imaginable. It will be interesting to see if it develops a bit more midpalate depth and pliancy. Today, the 2014 is a bit austere, even within the context of the year and this site, where the wines are a bit on the nervous side to start. I have seen Vietti Raveras blossom into spectacular wines and imagine that will be the case here as … more

Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato DOCG 2011

One of the most historic and important vineyards in Barolo, Monprivato is solely owned by the Mascarello family. Soils composed of clayey-silty marl, with good structure and active limestone, combined with south-westerly exposure allow this vineyard to produce Barolo with excellent body, bouquet and elegance.

Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo Barolo Gabutti 2015 Magnum

No chance to mistake this, with its abundance of darker things; stock, porcini, graphite, smoke and black cherry. Under this very typical Serralunga 'tarry/earthy' mantle though, are other complexities of dried roses, orange and spices. The firm and enlivening structure of a great Serralunga is here to underpin all this. Strong black tea tannins at present. All components are here.

Vietti Barolo Castiglione DOCG 2015 Magnum

'Vietti's 2015 Barolo Castiglione is soft, silky and pliant, all qualities that make it a good choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Floral and nicely lifted, the 2015 is very pretty, if not quite the overachiever it can be. I expect the 2015 will be even more expressive once the tannins soften a bit further. In this tasting, the Castiglione stands out for its freshness and energy. Time in the glass brings out an extra … more

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello 2012

Brooding Nebbiolo fruit rests on a bed of underbrush, smoky minerals, warm cigar wrapper, Christmas cake and herbs in this warm weather 2012 Barolo Colonello. This intense wine oozes across the palate, powered by thrumming acidity and scattering chewy tannins as it builds to a lingering, herbal finish. Made from grapes grown on 40 to 45-year-old vines, the third "cru" from Bussia Soprana, the gracious Colonnello is the deepest in color and consistently the most approachable of Aldo Conterno’s single-vineyard … more

Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo Barolo Monprivato 2013

'Mid ruby with broad orange rim. The typical fruit-driven Sordo approach, but with a mineral streak on the nose. Almost a little tarry on the palate. Signature Sordo intensity of fruit on the palate. Much richer style compared with Giuseppe Mascarello. Richly tannic too.'

Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo Barolo Monprivato 2015

The 4th wine made from this famous cru, which vies with Cannubi, Francia or either of the Rocches (of Serralunga and Castiglione Falletto) as the greatest name of Barolo. Until 2012 the Sordo family used their small parcel as part of the blend of their normale. It's clear a great Barolo is emerging in cru form from this parcel. Certainly austere and reserved, it harbours an abundance of characters and complexities to fuel the intrigue. Berry fruits, cranberry and raspberry … more
