Domaine Nicole Lamarche Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2018

Lamarche's 1.35 hectares of vineyards in the Clos de Vougeot are situated over three terroirs: one is at the top of the Clos near the Château (actually there are two small parcels in the area known as Montiotes Hautes); another is in the middle tranche on the Vosne side (Petits Maupertuis); and the remaining parcel is lower down near the RN74 (Baudes Basses). All three parcels are picked at the same time and co-fermented in open-top wooden vats.

As you might expect, Nicole Lamarche vinifies a much finer, prettier expression of the Clos—very Vosne in style. In fact, Vougeot seldom comes as lacy and elegant as this. That said, a terroir can't completely change its spots, and in the context of this producer you will naturally find more power and more mineral, savoury structure compared to the other wines listed here. Again, in the context of today's Grand Cru Burgundy pricing, this is a genuine bargain.

"1.36 ha in total across three plots. This has a fuller pink-purple colour than the other wines, and a nose which speaks of its identity more forcefully. Extra rich on the palate - that is by Lamarche standards- but with a fine fresh acidity too, after which the fruit comes swooping back. The tannins are tucked away out of sight. This is really impressive, while remaining true to the Lamarche style." 93-97 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"Nicole Lamarche is producing masterful wines from her holding in the Clos. The domaine owns four parcels: two smallish ones in the northwest section of the vineyard near the top of the slope; one in the southwest corner; and one in the middle on the eastern wall at the bottom, for a total of 1.36 hectares. The 2018 vintage is a bit closed on the initial attack, but with time it opens up nicely to show an impressive complexity of red and black fruit, earth and mineral notes. The texture is silky and very fine, beautifully fresh and long." 94 points, Tim Atkin MW, Decanter
