22% ABV. "The 1964 Palo Cortado Marqués de Poley Selección was aged in a solera system of which 50 botas remain. It's a very old fortified wine produced with Pedro Ximénez grapes, aged in well-seasoned American oak barrels. It is full-bodied, which hints at an Oloroso origin, and has the aromas of a very old wine with rusty nail, saltpeter, low tide, phosphor and matchstick notes with a volatile twist. Wines like this are not meant to be consumed by … more

"Ripe, tarry plums and black cherries with violets, rocks, coffee and graphite. Refined notes of balsamic fruit and cocoa powder, too. Full-bodied and juicy with an iron fist of tannins, yet at the same time so velvety and polished. Very long, focused finish, showing lots of finesse and layers. Drinkable now, but better after 2025." 95/100. James Suckling

"The Romaee-Conti of Jerez".
Moscatel Toneles is one of the legendary wines of the sherry region, produced by Valdespino.
It is an extremely old, powerful Moscatel that was long forgotten, because there was simply no market for it - up until Robert Parker gave it 100/100 a while back. Anyway it is said to be over 100 years of age (though they don't seem to disclose that).
"The NV Moscatel Toneles has reached a mythical status locally in Spain. It's … more

Descendientes de José Palacios (DJP) is one of three estates of the family of Alvaro Palacios. The 'descendientes' are Alvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Perez Palacios, both of whom grew up in the area of Rioja. The estate began when they identified very old plantings on Mencía on the high mountainous slopes of Corullón, which they have in subsequent years renovated the vineyards and refined their approach to vinifying Mencía.
This particular bottling comes from the Las Llamos plot, … more

The big brother to Petalos. This wine shows extra depth and increased minerality. This is a seriously good wine that rivals Bordeaux/Burgundy/Barolo for sense of place, intrigue and complexity. Look out for the Single Vineyard DJP wines for a mind blowing experience.

During refurbishments to the historic Calle Misericordia in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (home to the La Guita solera), a number of special vessels stood out due to their size and origins. One such vessel was a magnificent tonel gordo (120 arrobas, i.e. a 2,000-litre cask) situated in a corner of the room, separated from the main rows of casks that were standing by the wall. Navazos had this single large cask filled with a selection of the best Amontillados of the … more

A labour of love from Telmo Rodriguez, the 2014 was the first of several vintages they vinified that they were willing to release to public. It was clearly worth the wait because within each bottle is some quintessential Rioja ready to draw you in. The vines are located in an amphitheatre near the village of Labastida, mainly Tempranillo with some Graciano, Mazuelo and a smattering of other local varieties. Clay, wild raspberries, lavender and wild herbs waft up from the … more

"The eponymous red 2021 Clos Mogador fermented with some 30% full clusters trying to give it more freshness (but without noticing the stems) with a long maceration (40 to 50 days) and (almost) no punching down, with less extraction. There's been a progressive change … more

Producer Notes - "A very special and exclusive sweet wine made from a selection of grapes of the same name, properly dehydrated in the sun and turned into wine using artisan methods. Aged under the traditional system of soleras and criaderas over many years in American oak, it is a creamy, velvety wine with a balance of non-cloying sweetness and refreshing acidity.
