Biodynamic. Together with its sister-in-arms, Cuvée Edmond, Dix-Neuf is the antithesis of modern 'textbook' Sancerre. This jaw-dropping Sancerre is drawn from the oldest vines in the Moussière vineyard (approximately 100 years of age) cropped at Grand Cru Burgundy-level yields (in fact, the lower end of this range). The wine was fermented and raised in 2,000-litre, tronconique wooden tanks for 12 months before a spell in steel, again on lees. Only 500 cases per year get to see the light of … more

"One of the most talented winemakers in the Loire - he farms his 40 hectares in a method close to biodynamic. His whole range of wines have drive, and are regularly among the best wines in and around Saumur. The whites have remarkable finesse and are extremely delicate. Also, they are chenins that are agreeable young, which is sufficiently rare as to be emphasized. His reds are at the same level. Good vine age counts for a lot, his talent … more

Mostly from younger vines up to about 15 yo, this wine is vinified in cement tanks using indigenous yeast and aged in a combination of large old oak and cement tanks. A real ‘vin de soif’ giving the extravagant raspberry perfume and thirst quenching freshness that Chinon is so well known for. Very fresh, very moreish.

Domaine de la Chevalerie is a leading name in the Bourgueil appellation, and has been owned by the Caslot family for 14 generations.
A 20-acre parcel between Galichets and the winery, planted on about two feet of clay overlying limestone. This was initially planted in 1922 and this site, like Busardières, supports older vines better than the above two parcels. Average vine age here is 50 to 55 years old, and the wine typically has the intense, full fruit of … more

100% Chenin Blanc, grown on the calcareous soils in and around Brézé. More precisely, this comes from younger vines in Clos de Guichaux and Clos des Carmes, as well as some old vines from the Bas de Pentes terroir of Brézé. Then there is a splash of Les Chapaudaises from Bizay. As any Saumurois will tell you, these terroirs are some of the crown jewels of Saumur (particularly the Clos des Carmes which sits on the chalky mother-rock of the … more

"Honey and spice aromas give way to a luscious palate, with notes of honey, marzipan, orange and dried apricot. Noticeable sweetness is well balanced with acidity. Though rich, it's not really a dessert wine, and though it would accompany food well, it's probably best appreciated on its own. Delicious now, and should improve through 2010." 91 points, The Wine Spectator
