This is very much the modern face of Spain, being picked into small baskets, de-stemmed, must chilled and fermented in stainless steel. Biological viticulture, and no additions in the winery - just perfectly balanced sugar/acid/tannin in the berry which is then carefully nurtured into balanced wine. Gorgeous texture without overt fructose, perfectly savoury minerality and really good length. Oh, yeah and some really yummy fruit, too.

This unwooded Rioja is a fantastic modern interpretaion of this classic old world region. The tempranillo grape shows plump cherry, cola, has nice fine dusty tannins and lifted aromatics.

A single vineyard expression from an organically farmed vineyard sitting at 600m above sea level, the vines are 30 years old and the finished wine is, simply put, bloody good. Concentrated black fruits with notes of rosemary and honey and an earthy rich character we could almost describe as tar, and yet somehow, despite this complexity of flavor the wine is still refined and elegant, soft on the palate with subtle, well integrated tannin.

In Malaga, Telmo and Pablo work high up in the mountains, in the village of Cómpeta, whose brown slate slopes face towards Morocco and realise extraordinary Mountain Wines, as the sweet moscatels here are known. This is the most concentrated old vine Moscatel fruit, and has swallowed 20 months in new French barriques. The fruit is so good that the wood is virtually undetectable, save for an extra dimension of spicy, savoury structure tucked into the fruit richness. This is … more

A 'barranco' is a radical vineyard, and they really are: brown schist, ravine-steep, ultra-high-altitude, no 'soil' to speak of, and quite minerally with lots of quartz. Fruit from old, niggardly centenarian bush-vines, now farmed biodynamically, is now gently handled in large older French oak and concrete eggs. Smells of brick-dust, floral red fruits, pimiento and woodspice. Big never so beautiful - it has space, grace and wisdom exceeding extract and alcohol.

A labour of love from Telmo Rodriguez, the 2014 was the first of several vintages they vinified that they were willing to release to public. It was clearly worth the wait because within each bottle is some quintessential Rioja ready to draw you in. The vines are located in an amphitheatre near the village of Labastida, mainly Tempranillo with some Graciano, Mazuelo and a smattering of other local varieties. Clay, wild raspberries, lavender and wild herbs waft up from the … more

This eighty-year-old vineyard is on the most eastern part of Lanciego, facing mostly west and south with good exposure. It is just under a hectare in size (.93ha) with traditional bush vines on chalky clay at 610 meters altitude. El Velado is a field blend of mostly Garnacha and Tempranillo, but other old varieties are also present including some white. Hand picked with wild yeast primary fermentation in open oak casks followed by 15 months aging in 500L French oak.

The cold clay soil of Lanciego speaks very clearly on the nose, partnered by equally typical 'red heather' smells of the locale (thyme, lavender and more). No fruit bomb, it's a countryside wine, with meat, cherry, mint and licorice all in a swirl. There are hints of sweet spice and overall it has great freshness. The palate opens with succulence, juicy and laden with red berries, then glides out and down into the mineral-flecked beauty of natural fruit tannin and … more

Telmo is flying the flag for unoaked, joven style reds from the best regions around Spanish. The hotter and drier climate at Toro produces tempranillo with more weight and tannin than say Rioja, lending this a somewhat New World feel.

Gorgeous fruit/oak synthesis, savoury, lots of spice, and the integration allows fantastic sense of palate weight, finishes fresh and crisp. Black cherry, gamey - nice earthy perfumes and excellent acid/tannin structure.

"The nose reminded me of wet chalk straight away, a fine and subtle minerality, slowly opening up to aromas of violets and lavender. It had hints of pollen and honey wax, perfumed but in a subtle way. It is perhaps a little more austere and reticent than previous vintages that were warmer and drier. There is a big difference in the acidity that provides for an effervescent texture, with a terse sensation, with tension and a tasty finish with notes … more
