"Ripe, tarry plums and black cherries with violets, rocks, coffee and graphite. Refined notes of balsamic fruit and cocoa powder, too. Full-bodied and juicy with an iron fist of tannins, yet at the same time so velvety and polished. Very long, focused finish, showing lots of finesse and layers. Drinkable now, but better after 2025." 95/100. James Suckling

Blueberry, tobacco and hung beef - it's gotta be Ribera! Well, good Ribera anyway ...With a pronounced earthiness, cool and precise in line, low in fructose, elegant and fine. Not a wine of bigness, it's a lovely, pure wine of very high quality and beautifully composed. Dark cherry fruit specked with tobacco melds into a fine tannin line which itself seems indivisible from fruit and also from earth and is wired on steely minerals and fine natural acidity.

A 'barranco' is a radical vineyard, and they really are: brown schist, ravine-steep, ultra-high-altitude, no 'soil' to speak of, and quite minerally with lots of quartz. Fruit from old, niggardly centenarian bush-vines, now farmed biodynamically, is now gently handled in large older French oak and concrete eggs. Smells of brick-dust, floral red fruits, pimiento and woodspice. Big never so beautiful - it has space, grace and wisdom exceeding extract and alcohol.

The wine is made from 100% Garnacha (Grenache) grapes grown on 90 year old bush vines in the village of Cadalso de los Vidrios, which is located in the Sierra de Gredos. The vines are planted at between 700 to 1,100 metres above sea level which encourages a long, gradual ripening season for the fruit, producing concentrated flavours from the warm, sunny days coupled with fresh, balancing acidity from the cool nights.
