G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera 2018

"The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a powerful, tightly wound wine. Gravel, smoke, cured meats, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol emerge, but only with quite a bit of reticence. This deceptively mid-weight Barolo has a good bit of brawn. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges from behind the tannins. Drink 2026-2043". 93, Antonio Galloni

G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera 2019

"The 2019 Barolo Ravera is redolent of red fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper and orange peel. A Barolo of tension and energy, the 2019 is intensely bright and saline to the core. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. This is an especially taut style, even for Vajra" 96 Points. Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Chiara Boschis E. Pira Barolo Mosconi 2017

The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, scorched earth, spice and leather add to an impression of gravitas. This is an especially somber, potent Barolo that needs time to soften. Even so, it will always be a brute. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. The Barolo Mosconi emerges from the estates oldest vines, which are 70-80 years old, and is aged in barrique. 95 points, Antonio Galloni

Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2014

A blend of several small parcels of vines from a number of communes, Le Vigne is Luciano Sandrone's ode to "traditional" or blended Barolo. All of the sites that go into Le Vigne are markedly different in terms of altitude, soil and exposure, and together they help provide a broad overview of Barolo in a given year. As with the previous release, this wine now includes fruit from four communes: Barolo (Vignane), Serralunga (Baudana), Novello (Merli) and a new source … more

Massolino Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba DOCG 2019 Magnum

Diam. First produced in 1911, the fruit for Massolino's classic cuvée is selected from seven sites across roughly seven hectares of prime-sited Serralunga vineyards. The most important of these sites-Briccolina, Collareto, Broglio and Le Turne-are dotted around the town itself (Le Turne borders Margheria, while Collareto lies next to Vigna Rionda)-so we are talking quality real estate. The 2019 also includes a little declassified fruit from Massolino's Parussi Cru. Vine age varies from 10 to 55 years.

Seghesio Barolo La Villa 2016 Magnum

"The 2016 Barolo La Villa is a beguiling wine that needs a bit of time in bottle to fully open up. Then again, it is a young Barolo, so that is very much to be expected. Dried herbs, mint, licorice, dark cherry, underbrush and a whole range of spiced/balsamic notes fill out the layers. Next to the straight Barolo, La Villa has more body, depth and texture. It is another fine effort from Seghesio." - Antonio Galloni

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2016

The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Cicala offers a ripe fruit profile with layers of menthol and medicinal herb. The finish is beautiful, long and chalky, and you don't get as much alcohol in the Cicala (compared to Romirasco). The fruit is dried and streamlined, and this wine does show good

promise for aging. The tannins are beautiful, coating your teeth and palate with no bitter edge.

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello 2016

The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows dark fruit intensity, dried cherry, spice, licorice and tilled earth. The wine delivers its aromas in a direct and immediate manner, with menthol and balsam herb fitting into oaky aromas of sweet spice. For whatever reason, I notice the oak more in Colonnello, but this will relax with time. The wine will be ready to drink after the 10-year mark.

Luigi Oddero Barolo Vigna Rionda 2014

14.5%, this is a characteristic 14 vintage for us. A vintage not given anywhere near enough air-time, this is a perfect example of how beautiful it can be. Compact and focused with crunchy red-fruited purity, cranberries, currants, wild strawberries with perfumed talc notes and a suggestion of mandarin peel - super enticing with a precision of frame, underlying minerality and beautiful freshness.

For all who criticized the 2014 vintage across the board, this is a great counterpoint. Opening with enticing … more

Vietti Barolo Ravera Novello 2014

Another highlight in this range, the 2014 Barolo Ravera opens with the most exquisite, captivating aromatics imaginable. It will be interesting to see if it develops a bit more midpalate depth and pliancy. Today, the 2014 is a bit austere, even within the context of the year and this site, where the wines are a bit on the nervous side to start. I have seen Vietti Raveras blossom into spectacular wines and imagine that will be the case here as … more

Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 2018 Magnum

The Bricco Boschis Cru is a truly profound vineyard; an amphitheatre-shaped site that produces this estate's most emblematic Barolo. This comes from vines with an average age of 50 years, mostly situated in two parcels within this single vineyard. The first is the Punta Marcello, which lies at the top of the slope next to the cantina. This cool terroir is known for its fragrant, pale juice and long, angular tannins. Then, there is the Vigna Colle Sudovest parcel, lying … more

Vietti Barolo Lazzarito Serralunga d'Alba 2016

"The 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is another stunning wine in this range. The 2016 is the first vintage of the Lazzarito I can remember tasting in which intensely mineral notes accompany the more savory, earthy notes that are so typical of this site. Graphite, sage, dried flowers, crushed rocks, menthol, dried rose petal, mint, licorice and blood orange race out of the glass in a breathtaking, towering Barolo that hits all the right notes from the start to its chiseled, strikingly … more
