Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Mon Aïeul 2016

"Getting more than one exclamation in the notes, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is a deep, rich yet vibrant red that offers a kaleidoscope of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, crushed flowers, Asian spices, and cured meats. It's more opulent and sexier than the 2010, fresher and purer than the 2007, has deep, full-bodied aromas and flavors, and a huge finish. It's a sensational, heavenly Châteauneuf-du-Pape that tops out my scale. This cuvée is 100% Grenache that was not destemmed … more

Roger Sabon Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Cuvee Prestige 2012

A blend of 70% old vine Grenache with 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure and lively, with clean, classical aromas and flavors, solid concentration and soft, fine tannins. This ’12 frames its red and blue fruit with spice, smoked meats, and exotic spices; intense and concentrated, this wine is pure pleasure. This is an exceptional wine that will age beautifully for another decade. Roger Sabon is a traditionalist and prefers to age its wines … more

Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2014 Magnum

Raspail-Ay was founded in 1854 with 18 hectares under vine planted to Grenache (80%) Syrah (15%) and Mourvedre (5%) proprietor Dominique-Ay keeps things pretty simple at Gigondas' finest address - one red and one rosé. The Gigondas reflects the appellation's characteristics faithfully in an elegantly robust style which needs four or so years for the tannins to meld with the wine.

Dense and concentrated with dark fruits, pepper and spices with a gamey note, there is also a stony mineral … more

Chateau Mont-Redon Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2006

Cherry, mineral, some choc-licorice, lavender and spice. It’s medium to full bodied with fine tannin and has an appealing ‘stony’ character to go along with its largely savoury flavour profile, though there’s ample fruit flesh hanging on those bones too. Here’s a really good drink that’s lively and suave, with a lighter, almost Pinot-esque, feel to it. Time is likely to be kind too. Lovely.

Franck Balthazar Chaillot Cornas 2012

The ’12 boasts all the savory, aromatic complexity that Syrah is capable of with notes of violets, spice, game and smoke. There’s a ton of power and a driving, dark mineral streak that leads to a long, precisely tapered finish. The vine age (they were planted in 1911 and 1913) reveals itself in the wine’s soil-soaked concentration. The freshness shouldn’t be overlooked either.
